A win for decent Americans amidst a flurry of “conservative” evil
We're moving in the right direction, but there's a lot more to do
Decent America is very encouraged by the big win in Ohio on Tuesday. As another victory against “conservative” anti-democracy, the vote slamming Republicans for yet again trying limit majority rule shows that decent citizens are wising up.
But nearly half a century of “conservative” abuse of America’s rights culminating in the Trumpian apocalypse has produced new nadirs of Republican depravity at a dizzying clip.
Just the day after the big win, Ron DeSantis, using the abusive dictatorial powers granted to him by a demented Republican legislature and Federalist Society confederates on the state courts, fired another elected State Attorney, Monique Worrell. Needless to say, she is a Democrat, elected by 67% of her consituents. DeSantis replaced her with a Federalist Society Republican, Andrew Bain. Supermajority elections don’t matter to Republicans if they can use illicit power to undo them.
The same day as the big win, a nut-job, religious wacko, Federalist Society “judge” in Texas ordered Southwest Airlines to give “religious freedom” education to some of their workers as part of a lawsuit settlement, even though no one involved in the suit was asking for anything like that. On top of that, he demanded that the “reeducation” be conducted by a notorious right-wing hate group. Again, “conservatives” see nothing wrong with imposing their “beliefs” on others if they can get away with it.
Trump lunatics in New Hampshire, interviewed outside a Trump rally on Tuesday, are now openly saying they will launch civil war if they can’t get their way in politics. Compromise means nothing to Republicans. If they can get their way through violence, they will.
And speaking of violence, a Utah man called Craig D. Robinson with a long history of threatening violence against President Biden and Vice-President Harris was killed while the FBI was executing a search warrant. Astutely dubbed “The MAGA Sasquatch” for the picture at the top of this post, Robinson seems mistakenly to have drawn the conclusion from Trump’s blatant criminality that there are no consequences for Republican violence. I say mistakenly because he learned nothing from the many January 6 attackers who are now in jail, or from the coming indictments and convictions of Trump lackeys. Republicans think they can say and do anything.
Trump himself, of course, continues to get more outrageous every day. On Tuesday in New Hampshire, he threatened to violate any protective order the judge imposes on him in the January 6 conspiracy case in DC. Republicans think they can break the law and just disregard the consequences. That's why it's so importnat for Trump and all his co-conspirators to due hard jail time. Maybe if they see their criminal role models getting what they deserve, they'll finally figure out that Decent America won't put up with their lawbreaking.
A secret memo written by Trump advisor and Federalist Society hack Kenneth Chesebro was unsealed yesterday. It shows the twisting of the law that Trump lackeys engaged in to come up with the fake electors conspiracy. Here are some choice paragraphs.
It seems feasible that the vote count can be conducted so that *at no point will Trump be behind in the electoral vote count* unless and until Biden can obtain a favorable decision from the Supreme Court upholding the Electoral Count Act as constitutional , or otherwise recognizing the power of Congress (and not the President of the Senate) to count the votes .
Specifically but only if all six States are still contested , and all six slates of Trump-Pence electors had voted on December 14 I think the count could be managed so that Biden would have to seek Supreme Court review either when he is behind 12-0 in the electoral count or, at latest, when he is behind 232-227.
Even if, in the end, the Supreme Court would likely end up ruling that the power to count the votes (in the sense of resolving controversies concerning them) does not lie with the President of the Senate , but instead lies with Congress (either voting jointly, or in separate Houses) , letting matters play out this way would guarantee that public attention would be riveted on the evidence of electoral abuses by the Democrats, and would also buy the Trump campaign more time to win litigation that would deprive Biden of electoral votes and/or add to Trump's column.
Obviously, Chesebro didn’t care at all about distorting the law to come up with a conspiracy to defraud the American people, using MAGA nitwits to create fake controversy and civil unrest.
The Federalist Society has be abusing the Constitution’s protections for decades. They have turned the First Amendment and the Second Amendment into loopholes that protect them from common-sense punishment for antisocial, antidemocratic, and even violent behavior against their fellow citizens.
What they have been doing is no secret. Their own promotional literature shows that [their first principle is “the state exists to preserve freedom.” For “freedom" read irresponsibility, selfishness, and immorality. And anyway, the state does not exist to "preserve” freedom, as though the state is subservient to freedom. There is no freedom without the state. The state establishes freedom for those who adhere to its principles. And those who don't adhere to the principle can either accept punishment or go live somewhere else.
All this points to the backlog of work that will have to be done once Decent America destroys the Republican party. Standing down the Federalist Society and purging their hacks from our midst will be a massive, but necessary undertaking.
But let us all take consolation in the moment. Ohio shows that we are on the right track. Let’s take heart from that and do the work necessary to put an end to this era of “conservatism.”
