The 2022 midterms didn’t go well for Republicans. They thought they were going to steamroll over the political landscape. They thought they would control the House of Representatives by a huge margin. They thought they would have a large majority in the Senate.
But they were wrong.
Now they are in disarray. Who is to blame? Is it Trump? Is it the MAGA hordes that hold the party by the throat? It is the dreaded “moderates” who won’t act like rapacious, ruthless Orcs?
For Republicans who still can’t understand how they could blow what they thought was a layup, here are a few notes.
Your lunatic obsession with conspiracy theories makes people hate you.
Your lunatic obsession with unregulated access to and usage of guns makes people hate you.
Your lunatic obsession with controlling women and their bodies makes people hate you.
Your lunatic obsession with using the justice system to subvert justice in your own interest makes people hate you.
Your lunatic obsession with white supremacy makes people hate you.
Your lunatic obsession with hating immigrants makes people hate you.
Your lunatic obsession with radical sects of fake Christianity, together with your manic attempts to force others to act according to your fanatical “religious” dictates, makes people hate you.
Your lunatic obsession with the most ignorant, venal, criminal, destructive, hateful sub-human ever to hold the presidency of the United States makes people hate you.
Your lunatic obsession with incessantly trying to prove that Democrats are more criminal than Republicans—an absolute impossibility considering the crimes of Nixon, Reagan, W, and Trump together with his lackeys and the shamefully submissive Republican party—makes people hate you.
Your lunatic obsession with the most loony MAGA politicians like Marjorie Taylor Greene makes people hate you.
Your lunatic obsession with, and your craven subservience to, the lowest common denominator in your most demented base voters makes people hate you.
Your lunatic obsession with rejecting all decent values like the rule of law, the standards of civility, and even basic patriotism makes people hate you.
Here are a dozen reasons why most people in this country hate you, Republicans. There are hundreds of others.
Because you make people hate you, they don’t let you win elections. As Joe Scarborough keeps pointing out, Republicans lost “bigly” in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022. This is because decent people hate Republicans.
There are enough decent Americans now to prevent Republicans from gaining much national power. Because Republicans are busy making themselves hateful to new voters, a whole generation of young people are entering their first elections with a hatred of Republicans. And statistics show that people stick with the political affiliations they choose in their first elections.
On top of that, the old people are dying off. Those over 65 were the only group in the 2022 elections to support Republicans. As oldsters die off, young people who hate Republicans will form an ever larger share of the electorate.
Face it, Republicans. Trump was the high-water mark for you antisocial, selfish, mean-spirited, anti-American, fascist, fake-religious beliefs. From here on, no matter what you do in furtherance of those vicious beliefs, more and more people will hate you, precisely because you have those beliefs.
None of your old political tricks are going to work any longer. You are not losing because you have the wrong message. Or because you are not being aggressive enough. Or because you are not dominating the media with “conservative” BS. Or because you haven’t gerrymandered enough electoral districts. Or because you haven’t suppressed enough Democratic votes. Or because you haven’t filed enough frivolous election lawsuits. You are not losing because you are getting these things wrong.
You are losing because YOU are wrong.
You are wrong about everything that matters, about everything that decent people hold dear. Indeed, you are Republican only because you are wrong and agressively obstinate about it.
So your only hope is stop being Republican.
Stop believing obsessive right-wing lunacy. Stop listening to right-wing media. Stop seeing people who differ from you as threats. Stop treating unfamiliar ideas as anathema. Join the four-hundred-year long Enlightenment that has actually made life better for ever-increasing numbers of human beings. Become decent and join the majority who live in Decent America.
Change your life.
Or be hated, despised, and powerless.
Your choice.
