Herschel Walker’s abortion scandal is not particularly about hypocrisy
It’s about Republican depravity
The Republican scandal-du-jour is swirling around the GOP’s senatorial candidate in Georgia, onetime football icon Herschel Walker. Apparently, after mouthing off a lot about his absolute stance against abortion, it turns out he helped pay for an abortion for at least one of the many women he’s impregnated over the years.
Is this hypocritical? Of course. But hypocrisy died as any sort of criticism in the Republican party when it lined up behind pussy-grabber-in-chief Donald Trump.
This scandal is not about hypocrisy, except inasmuch as the failure to care about it in the slightest is yet another sign of Republican lack of ethics.
What this scandal is really about is “conservative” depravity. Republicans have sunk so low on the scale of creatures-that-dwell-under-rocks that you can lift the rocks and dig down to China and still not find them.
The Republican party, predictably now, is doubling down on Walker’s candidacy. Nothing a Republican does is disqualifying any longer. And can we be surprised? After witnessing the long list of Trump’s crudities and crimes just since he became president, is it any wonder that Republican have learned ethics does not matter? Indeed, recent history shows that the more outrageous the behavior, the more doubling down on it can win over scum GOP voters.
It is really notable how cruel the whole Walker candidacy is. With Republians now, the cruelty really is the point.
Walker is clearly mentally ill. On top of that, his whole life seems to have been devoted to ethically values-free behavior. He imagines that he is devoted Christian, but he’s fathered at least four children out of wedlock and hasn’t fathered any of them. He constantly says things that make no sense except to the most brain-dead of Republicans. He seems to be in a stupor much of the time.
Such a person is not in any way fit to withstand the rigors of a senatorial campaign, let alone the rigors of actually serving as a senator if he should be carried into the seat by fanatical, power-mad Republican voters. It is cruel to let him put himself through that. It is also cruel to let his family members suffer from his self-destructive behavior. It is also cruel to let the people of Georgia suffer both from the campaign and from the possible seating of Walker as a senator.
But the Republican party now flies the banner of cruelty high. They have bought the brand. Scum Republicans just love being perceived as cruel and uncaring, the worse the better if it helps them get the only thing left that matters to them—the power to inflict more and more vicious cruelty.
I don’t need to tell decent Americans how debased this is. People who live this way do so because they constantly fear of losing something to somebody sometime. They can justify any wickedness to themselves as long as it prevents them from losing anything.
But those who are so cowed by fear are not true men and women. (See a powerful quotation about this in any of these places: FB1, FB2, Twitter.)
They are worse than “deplorable,” which was a correct descriptor at the time Hillary Clinton applied it. They are depraved. They have turned themselves into gollum-like homunculi, diminutive humanoid shapes with twisted souls that dream of nothing but power.
The news this morning is studded with the press’s latest horserace promotion, namely, that Republicans are coming back in the polls after several months of being on the ropes.
The press needs the horserace. Their business depends on it.
But we decent Americans cannot survive if next month’s election is a horserace election. It must be a poll-defying blowout, a devastating repudiation of Republicans and the depravity they relish. It must defy the historical trends. It must defy the press. It must deal Republicans the greatest defeat they could ever envisage.
If it is does not, Decent America will die and Depraved America will take its place.
And the world will sink into an American-led authoritarian nightmare that has no historical analogue.
