Depraved Republican religiosity breeds evil in the hearts of “conservative Christians”
Ginni Thomas and the GOP truly believe the delusion that Christ has deputized them to destroy demon Democrats
I have never published three days consecutively, but this week’s unprecedented demonstrations of twisted wickedness by Republicans simply cry out for denunciation.
My two previous posts tried to get at the underlying perverseness of the Republican opposition at Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearings in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The bottom line on the disgusting behavior of GOP senators at that hearing was that they were trying to set up an excuse for the reprehensible evil they intend to do as soon as they can wrest back control of either house of Congress. If liberals are godless, child-pornographer-loving, soft-on-crime, ridiculers of “conservatives” as they claim, then no abuse of power will be too great to heap upon them once Republicans get power again.
If you thought that this only applied to political abuses of power like gerrymandering, voter suppression, and outright overturning elections—well, you need to understand that Republicans are far, far more perverted and evil than that.
And look who has arrived to demonstrate that right on cue! Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, the wife of the Supreme Court's most self-righteous justice (and that’s really saying something given the likes of Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett!), Clarence Thomas.
No doubt you’ve already seen or heard about this article by Bob Woodward and Bob Costa in today’s Washington Post. In it, Ginni Thomas is revealed to have been in close contact with Mark Meadows, Trump's chief of staff during and after the 2020 election.
There are 29 texts from Thomas to Meadows mentioned in the article. They show her to be a nutbag conspiracy theorist, referencing numerous debunked and lunatic fantasies of nefarious crimes committed by Democrats to replace Trump with Biden illegally.
Ginni Thomas has been off the rails for some time. You may remember that she actually called Anita Hill—nearly 20 years after Hill’s despicable treatment by the Senate Judiciary Committee that ended in Clarence Thomas’s appointment to the Supreme Court despite his proclivities toward pornography and sexual harassment (remember that, Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley?)—to demand an apology from Hill.
That was the kind of bizarre behavior Thomas was exhibiting in October 2010. More than a decade later, she seems to have gotten much worse.
But this post is not about Ginni Thomas, except as one example of the utterly deranged Republican party. I want to use a few quotations from her exchanges with Meadows to show just how evil Republicans have become.
Here is Thomas to Meadows on November 10 after news organizations began calling the election for Biden:
Help This Great President stand firm, Mark!!! . . . You are the leader, with him, who is standing for America’s constitutional governance at the precipice. The majority knows Biden and the Left is attempting the greatest Heist of our History.
A couple of weeks later, when Trump’s White House was already deeply involved in trying to subvert the election results, Meadows texted Thomas:
This is a fight of good versus evil. Evil always looks like the victor until the King of Kings triumphs. Do not grow weary in well doing. The fight continues. I have staked my career on it. Well at least my time in DC on it.
Thomas’s replied:
Thank you!! Needed that! This plus a conversation with my best friend just now. . . . I will try to keep holding on. America is worth it!
The reference to “my best friend” may implicate her husband in her deviant machinations to attempt overturning the election. Clarence Thomas has referred to his wife publicly as “my best friend.” Whether she considers him her best friend is not a matter of public record.
The press is starting to note that Clarence Thomas is the only Supreme Court Justice to opine that Trump’s records should not be turned over to Congress. He issued that opinion without any reasoning, in defiance of clear Federal law, and against the judgment of all the other Supreme Court Justices as well as the vast majority of legal scholars. But we leave aside the question of whether Clarence Thomas tried to obstruct of justice by protecting his wife’s texts from scrutiny.
The point I want to make here concerning these exchanges is that Thomas really believes this stuff. Meadows may be cynically feeding her a “Christian” line he knows she wants to hear (even though it’s entirely possible he buys it too)—but she eats it up. And what especially appeals to her about it? That Democrats are demons who will be cast into the pits of hell by “the King of Kings” in his aspect of Warrior God. She actually takes succor from this lunatic travesty of Christ’s message.
Now it seems to me that it is quite evil to believe that your political enemies are demons whom your God is determined to consign to the depths of hell. This belief alone makes you far more evil than run-of-the-mill corrupt politicians—who at least have the excuse of self-interested power-hungriness for their wickedness. They just want to get their opponents out of their way. Thomas and the lunatic Republicans want to exterminate them.
How do I know this? Check out another text from Thomas to Meadows, quoting some bilious Q-Anon BS:
Biden crime family & ballot fraud co-conspirators (elected officials, bureaucrats, social media censorship mongers, fake stream media reporters, etc) are being arrested & detained for ballot fraud right now & over coming days, & will be living in barges off GITMO to face military tribunals for sedition.
This goes far beyond attempts to set up Democrats for unjust abuse when Republicans regain power. This is setting up pogroms against Democrats when “the King of Kings” reinstalls Trump or a Trump wannabe as his representative on earth.
But in fact Thomas’s true-believer self-delusion is just another disguise of the same hunger for power that motivates Republicans in general. Check out the following passage from the Woodward and Costa article:
Thomas sent Meadows material she said was from Connie Hair, chief of staff to Gohmert. It is not clear if she was passing on a message from Hair or sharing Hair’s perspective as guidance for Meadows. The text message seems to quote Hair’s belief that “the most important thing you can realize right now is that there are no rules in war.”
“This war is psychological. PSYOP,” the text from Thomas states.
Now the ignorance exhibited about war in this exchange is, of course, staggering—but staggering ignorance is nothing new for Republicans. Of course there are rules in war. Some of them go back to the Bible, the book which hypocritical Republican “Christians” claim to be their blueprint for life. But putting Republican hypocrisy aside, there have been rules of war for centuries and there still are today.
So apart from the ignorance, why would someone say something like this? Only to justify their own lack of conscience. This is just what Republicans senators at the Jackson hearings were trying to do by painting liberals as monsters. Connie Hair and Ginni Thomas think that their “no rules in war” BS can justify the vengeance they intend to wreak on liberals if they can ever get the power to inflict it with impunity.
The stunning self-certainty of Republican delusional “Christianity” simply does not exist in Decent America. Decent people have a healthy amount of self-doubt. They know that they could be mistaken about anything and they try to keep themselves from launching off into spasms of self-certainty that will harm others. The constant false equivalences grasped at by the press to maintain the falsehood that both side harbor extremists are given the lie by this deranged “conservative” religious madness. Even Bob Woodward himself, who was pushing the “both sides do it” myth on Morning Joe today, could not produce a single example showing anything comparable on the liberal side. There is simply no Democratic equivalent of Republicans calling on God to justify their attempts to defy the Constitution and undo a democratic election.
The Ginni Thomas Republican party has no inner self-regulatory instinct any longer, if it ever had one. It is completely convinced of its rectitude, of its opponents’ demonism, and of its perfect right to extirpate the liberal infidel. History has thrown up such amalgams of politics and religion before. Fascism in particular, we should always remind ourselves, counts on censers of religiosity to perfume itself with the scent of divine approbation.
Madeleine Albright, who died a few days ago, tried to warn us about maniacal Republican self-delusion in her book Fascism: A Warning. Timothy Snyder has been trying to warn us about fascism in America for years. See his books The Road to Unfreedom and On Tyranny. But the past few days have been extraordinarily revelatory regarding the extensive metastasis of malevolence in the GOP psyche.
This is perverted. This is evil. This is Republican.
Scott, I have to admit that much of what I read and observe in our current, sick, political quagmire leaves me often depressed or even despondent. Since I have been reading your posts, I get more energized by your acuity, observations, and insights. I think our wishy-washy democrats need to point out a lot of what you are saying as they campaign for the fall. It's our greatest hope and the Republicans just get worse and worse. We need to point out how sick, small and fearful these idiots are. They don't hesitate to whack us.
